Scope and Contents

From the Series:

There are a total of 741 negatives, 5,889 color and 10 b&w photographs in 32 photo albums. The majority of these photographs, which were taken on Prof. Chow’s travel in the United States, China and Taiwan, are group photos of him with his immediate family and friends. Some of these photographs were taken on special family occasions such as on the wedding of his daughter, Lena and Kevin (folder 36-5), his retirement and his grandson, Jesse’s birth (37-5). Some photographs were taken at conferences (folders 36-2 through 36-4, 37-1, 37-2, 37-5 through 38-3, 38-6 and 39-2) that Prof. Chow had attended. They document Prof. Chow’s collegial and personal relationship with friends and renowned scholars. Among these prominent scholars are 胡繩Hu Sheng, 梁漱溟Liang Shuming, 白先勇Kenneth Pai, 饒宗頤Rao Zongyi, 洛夫Luo Fu, 張默Zhang Mo, 馮其庸Feng Qiyong, 周汝昌Zhou Ruchang, 柳無忌Liu Wuji, Boris Riftin, 劉賓雁Liu Binyan, 王若水Wang Ruoshui, 丁石孫Din Shisun, 馮友蘭Feng Youlan and季羡林Ji Xianlin. Many of the photographs, especially those in the Travel files include shots of street scenes in China. Folder 36-2, for instance, contains many photographs documenting students’ demonstration in Tiananmen Square in May 1989, and their protesting letters and posters. In some photo albums, shots of Chinese calligraphy and Chinese paintings are mixed with photographs of people. In folder 36-1, there are seven photo albums of solely Chinese calligraphy. These works of calligraphy are included in a 1995 book entitled 《民初書法 – 走過五四時代》Calligraphy of the Early Republic of China which was edited by Prof. Chow.

Sixteen slides in folder 40-5 are shots of manuscripts and poems. The poems were written by袁世凱Yuan Shikai for 駒井大尉, a Japanese doctor who had cured Yuan’s son in 1902. The slides of manuscripts document this incident in details.
