Lin Nien Tung Papers
Scope and Contents
The papers consist of 15 personal correspondences dated from 1972 to 1975, written by Dott. Lin Nien Tung to his friend, Mr. Li Hoo Cheong (李浩昌) who is a film critic, Japanese film expert and librarian in Hong Kong. Dott. Lin was first addressing Mr. Li by his pseudonym 舒明 and later sometimes by his real name 浩昌 (Hoo Cheong).
Dott. Lin wrote about his daily life and his study in Italy during 1972-1975. He shared his views on arts and culture regarding exhibitions, movies, articles, magazines and books. Famous among his friends, Dott. Lin was a bibliophile. It is obvious that from the letter’s conversation, Dott. Lin and Mr. Li were exchanging books, magazines and articles by mail. Dott. Lin’s views on aesthetics, Chinese language and culture were reflected in the letters, his interests were later developed in his works.

Dott. Lin Nien Tung was born on 25 November, 1944 in Guangdong, China and attended New Asia College in Hong Kong (now part of the Chinese University of Hong Kong). He had written film critics for magazines since he was student. He devoted his life in film industry as producer and director in 1970s, and later as film scholar after his study in Bologna, Italy. Dott. Lin returned to Hong Kong in 1975, then he taught at Department of Communication, Hong Kong Baptist College. He actively engaged himself in the film industry in Hong Kong and mainland China during 1980s. He died of cancer on 19 May, 1990, leaving his wife and daughter.
