Scope and Contents

The letter, sent from Jiujiang (Kiukiang), Jiangxi (Kiangsi) province in China, was signed by Edith Fredericks and addressed to 'Dear Friends'. The letter shared the traditional custom during Chinese New Year, including the practice of hanging up Tsai Shen (God of Wealth, 財神), as well as the associated taboo. The letter came along with an excerpt from 'Chinese Religion as Seen Through the Proverb' by Clifford H. Plopper, telling the story of 'The Kitchen God' (灶神).
