These letters, written to Fred Webb's mother, and sister, Nettie, in England, tell of the trip out to China, of events during his time at the training school, and what life was like in Chungking (Chongqing).

Fred Webb, a missionary with the China Inland Mission (CIM), left England on November 10, 1892, traveled to Shanghai, studied Chinese language in Gangking (安慶府, Anqing), and was assigned to work in Chungking (Chongqing). The last letter is dated February 1, 1894. Later, in 1896 he married Miss Van Lear, another C.I.M. missionary from the United States. They moved to Kweichow Province (Guizhou) and began to study a minority language, Miao. Mrs. Webb became ill in 1897 and they returned to the United States for medical treatment.
